Elderly Dalit Assaulted Over Accidental Act Near Temple

Article Today, Lucknow:
A disturbing case of caste-based violence has come to light in Kakori, near Lucknow, revealing the persistence of social discrimination. On the occasion of Diwali, 65-year-old Dalit, Ramphal Rawat, suffering from serious health issues, allegedly urinated near the Sheetla Mata Temple unintentionally. A local man, identified as Swamikant, physically assaulted him, humiliating the elderly man in a shocking display of caste arrogance. The incident occurred at least 40 metres away from the temple, yet it was used as justification for a brutal attack.

Allegations of Cruelty
According to reports, the accused forced Ramphal to ingest his own urine and instructed him to clean the floor, followed by a purported ritual purification. This act has drawn widespread condemnation for its medieval cruelty and blatant disrespect for human dignity. Observers noted that the attack exploited an inadvertent action and targeted the victim’s identity as a Dalit. Human rights groups and Dalit organisations have strongly criticised the incident, highlighting it as a violation of the constitutional right to equality.

Police Response
Following the complaint lodged by Ramphal at Kakori Police Station, Swamikant was promptly arrested. A case has been registered under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, which has been welcomed as an appropriate legal response. However, the accused has claimed that he did not force Ramphal to drink the urine and only touched it, raising concerns that the case might be diluted.

Political Reactions
The incident has attracted political attention, with Congress and Samajwadi Party leaders condemning the assault. Allegations have surfaced linking the accused to the RSS, and debates have emerged over the rise of caste discrimination under the current BJP administration. Leaders emphasise that merely arresting the perpetrator is insufficient and that immediate protection and compensation for the victim are required to uphold justice and demonstrate genuine governmental intent.

Broader Implications
This event has renewed discussions about the vulnerability of marginalised communities to caste-based violence, particularly during public festivals and religious observances. Advocates stress that systemic safeguards and strict enforcement of the SC/ST Act are crucial to prevent similar acts in the future. The case serves as a stark reminder of the work still needed to ensure equality and social justice in India.
