Khalistani Extremism Casts Shadow Over G7 Summit

Canadian Journalist Raises Alarm Over Anti-Modi Threats

A Canadian journalist has sparked fresh concern about rising Khalistani extremism ahead of the G7 Summit scheduled in Alberta later this month. Mocha Bezirgan, a known investigative journalist, claimed that certain Khalistani supporters are misusing Canada’s free speech laws to openly threaten Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s political agenda. Bezirgan warned that some extremist groups have said they want to “kill PM Modi’s politics at G7,” suggesting an attempt to embarrass or attack India diplomatically during the global summit.

Assault at Vancouver Rally Raises Eyebrows…
Bezirgan recently attended a pro-Khalistan rally in Vancouver where he says he was physically attacked. Protesters surrounded him, shouted threats, and forcibly took his phone. The incident, which has raised serious safety and press freedom concerns, was an attempt to stop him from documenting the extremism at the rally. Despite the assault, Bezirgan says he will continue to speak out and expose extremist elements operating in the name of free speech.

Allegations of Political Cover for Extremists…
In a bold statement, Bezirgan accused some Canadian political organizations of offering indirect support to Khalistani groups. He pointed out that groups like the Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) have openly backed violence, while others like the World Sikh Organization (WSO) give political cover to such movements under the shield of civil rights activism. He also noted that some Canadian politicians have shared platforms with people accused of terrorist activity, making it harder to draw a clear line between free speech and hate speech.

Modi’s G7 Visit Under Scrutiny…
Prime Minister Modi is expected to attend the G7 Summit from June 15–17 in Alberta, Canada. However, his visit is already facing protests from some Sikh groups in Canada. The World Sikh Organization has publicly opposed his invitation, calling it an insult to the Sikh community—especially as the summit falls near the anniversary of the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. The tension has added to ongoing diplomatic friction between India and Canada.

Government Divided Over Response
Canadian authorities now face a difficult decision: how to protect public order without compromising the country’s democratic values. While many are urging the government to crack down on extremist threats, others argue that freedom of expression must be preserved—even if the messages are unpopular or provocative. California Governor Gavin Newsom and others have criticized heavy-handed federal responses to protests in the past. With rising concerns over public safety and international diplomacy, officials must now walk a tightrope between control and liberty.

Global Focus on Canada as G7 Nears…
With the world watching, Canada’s ability to manage extremist threats during the G7 will be closely examined. The Modi-Khalistan tensions have turned what should be a diplomatic celebration into a sensitive political test for both Canada and India. Whether Canadian authorities will address these threats decisively—or allow them to grow under the protection of free speech—remains to be seen.
