In the digital world, social media has emerged as a powerful force. Especially for ‘Generation Z,’ born between 1997 and 2012, it has become an integral part of their lives. This generation has earned a reputation for being the most politically aware. Recent studies indicate that they are deeply immersed in online political discussions. A study report reveals that platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter are providing political knowledge to Generation Z youth.
They learn about everything happening anywhere in moments…
Generation Z is learning about political developments and social issues happening worldwide in moments through social media. Social media played a crucial role in rapidly disseminating information about movements like ‘Black Lives Matter,’ ‘EndSARS,’ and ‘Kancha Gachibowli.’ According to a survey, nearly half of TikTok users aged 18-29 use the platform for political information. These platforms not only provide information but also encourage youth to express their opinions and support struggles through online movements. In the words of Vandana, a senior IIT Patna student, “Social media is a wonderful platform to discuss various issues and share ideas. It has given me an understanding of many problems and has made me more actively involved in politics.” This generation is learning about the inequalities and injustices in the country and is trying to address them.
Distrust in the political system…
However, constantly being online regarding political matters is increasing stress among the youth. This is severely impacting their mental health. There are many reasons for this stress among the youth. The uncertainty in their lives… the lack of stability in matters like jobs and education is further increasing political stress. Moreover, compared to previous generations, Generation Z has grown up in a politically unstable period. This is causing frustration among them. Some are losing faith in political systems, feeling that their actions will not bring about any change.
