A sanitation worker from Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu has drawn national attention for returning gold ornaments found during duty. Durai, employed in municipal waste collection, reportedly discovered about 180 grams of gold and one kilogram of silver articles while clearing garbage in a residential locality. Instead of retaining the valuables, he handed them over to the police. The act has been widely acknowledged as a rare instance of integrity.

The development assumes significance in view of Durai’s personal circumstances. His son is said to be critically ill and in need of urgent surgery. The family faces severe financial constraints. The value of the recovered gold could have supported medical expenses. However, Durai chose to follow due process. The incident came to the attention of Vijayanagaram Member of Parliament Kalisetty Appalanaidu. The MP spoke to Durai and his family over a video call and conveyed his appreciation. He stated that honesty among ordinary workers strengthens public trust in institutions. He also indicated that he would personally meet the family during a visit to Tamil Nadu.

Appeal to the Prime Minister
Subsequently, the MP met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and submitted a letter seeking recognition for Durai. In the letter, he requested that the Union government consider honouring the sanitation worker for his integrity. He also highlighted that such examples reinforce ethical conduct in public life. The MP urged that the case be viewed as a model for civic responsibility.

Request for Medical Assistance
In addition, the MP appealed for medical support for Durai’s son. He requested that the Central government facilitate free treatment, including surgery, under appropriate health schemes. According to his office, the matter has been placed before the relevant authorities for consideration. Meanwhile, local officials in Tamil Nadu are also assessing available assistance.
