Gold-for-Bride Promise Sparks Political Row in Telangana

Article Today, Hyderabad:
A political storm erupted in Telangana after Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar stated that the government could not fulfil its election promise of offering one tula of gold to newly married women. His comments, made amid the high-profile Jubilee Hills by-election campaign, have drawn sharp criticism from within and outside the ruling Congress Party.

Controversial Remarks Stir Debate
During a public interaction, Mr. Prabhakar remarked that the “Tula gold” assurance made during the previous election was no longer feasible. He cited the steep rise in gold prices as the main reason, noting that the cost had nearly tripled since the promise was first made. His statement has caused widespread discontent among women who had hoped to benefit from the Mahalakshmi scheme.

Rising Gold Prices Blamed
The Minister explained that when the promise was announced, gold was priced at around Rs. 50,000 per tola, while it now stands close to Rs. 1.5 lakh. He said the government could not shoulder such a financial burden under current conditions. Critics, however, argue that the explanation reflects poor planning and lack of fiscal foresight.

Discontent Among Women Beneficiaries
Women across the State expressed disappointment, claiming they had trusted the Congress Party’s promise during the election campaign. Many alleged that the government had betrayed their faith and used populist pledges to secure votes. They said the decision not to deliver on the gold assurance undermined the government’s credibility and fairness.

Opposition Launches Attacks
The opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) accused the Congress of misleading voters with unrealistic commitments. BRS leaders charged that the government was hiding behind the rise in gold prices to escape responsibility. Political analysts believe the issue could harm the Congress Party’s standing, especially with urban voters in Jubilee Hills, where the by-election campaign is gaining intensity.

Fiscal Strain on the Treasury
Observers link the government’s retreat from the gold scheme to Telangana’s growing financial pressures. The State is already burdened by the cost of welfare programmes such as free bus travel for women, enhanced pensions, LPG subsidies, and food distribution. The cumulative expenditure has strained public finances, slowing infrastructure development.

Political Fallout Expected
The controversy is expected to remain a key talking point in Telangana politics in the coming weeks. While the government maintains that changed economic conditions justify its stance, opposition parties are using the issue to question its reliability. Analysts suggest the “gold-for-bride” row could have lasting implications for voter trust ahead of upcoming local elections.
