Mohan Bhagwat, chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, said that all people living in India are Hindus in cultural terms. Addressing the Sangh’s centenary celebrations in Mumbai, he described Hindu as a civilizational identity rather than a religious label. He underlined that national progress depends on social unity.
Culture Beyond Religion
Mr. Bhagwat explained that Hindu identity represents a shared way of life shaped on Indian soil. He said this cultural identity naturally belongs to everyone born in the country. According to him, Muslims and Christians living in India are also integral to this civilisation. Therefore, he stressed that all citizens belong to one society and one nation.

Elaborating further, Mr. Bhagwat spoke about differing attitudes among Hindus in society. He said some openly express pride in their identity, while others remain indifferent. Meanwhile, he observed that a section practices traditions privately but hesitates publicly. In addition, he noted that some have lost touch with their cultural roots. He said the Sangh’s objective is to bring all such groups together.
Partition and Its Impact
Turning to history, Mr. Bhagwat reflected on the Partition of India. He said the division occurred because of the weakening of shared cultural consciousness. He criticised the separation of the country on religious grounds. However, he asserted that Hindu thought promotes respect for all faiths. Therefore, he argued that strengthening this cultural outlook is essential for national unity.
Assurance of Inclusiveness
Mr. Bhagwat clarified that accepting Hindu identity does not require abandoning one’s personal religion. He described Hindutva as a framework that assures safety and dignity for all communities. He added that despite linguistic and ritual differences, the underlying culture remains one. This, he said, can also be termed Indianness. Hence, he remarked that phrases like Hindu-Muslim unity are unnecessary, as unity already exists.
Engagement With RSS
Speaking about the organisation, Mr. Bhagwat invited people to understand the RSS through direct interaction. He advised against forming opinions based on propaganda or allegations. He said the Sangh has evolved over its hundred-year journey. Moreover, he stated that constructive criticism based on facts would always be considered and corrected if needed.
Message to Families and Youth
Mr. Bhagwat also addressed social concerns, urging families to encourage dialogue at home. He expressed concern over youth falling into drug abuse and suicide. He said parents must foster self-respect and self-awareness among children. The event was attended by several prominent figures, including actor Salman Khan and filmmaker Subhash Ghai.
