Article Today, Hyderabad:
As the nation celebrated Diwali in joy and splendour, a 70-year-old woman died of starvation on the streets of Hyderabad. The elderly woman’s body was found near Akshitha Hospital in Gopanpally, in the heart of the city. Police suspect that she had been living alone and surviving on alms. Preliminary inquiries suggest that she had gone without food for several days before succumbing to hunger and exhaustion. The incident has cast a dark shadow on the city’s festive spirit.

Poverty Amid Prosperity
Hyderabad, known for its corporate skyline and booming IT industry, now faces an unsettling contrast between affluence and deprivation. The woman’s death amid luxury apartments and business hubs highlights the stark inequalities of modern urban life. Even as Hyderabad earns global recognition for its development, the tragedy exposes a disturbing gap in social welfare and food security. Police sources said the woman appeared destitute and had been seen begging in nearby areas before her death.
A Question of Humanity
The death has prompted widespread concern about the state of compassion and social responsibility in a rapidly modernising society. Despite numerous claims of charity, philanthropy, and social service by individuals and corporate trusts, few seem to have reached the city’s most vulnerable. On social media, many self-proclaimed benefactors speak of large donations and service initiatives, yet a starving woman lay unseen in their midst. The question remains: has urban progress made people indifferent to human suffering?
Administrative and Social Failure
The tragedy has also exposed systemic shortcomings in government welfare delivery. Telangana, like many states, implements schemes related to food security and social support for the elderly. Yet such incidents indicate that the benefits often fail to reach those in dire need. Experts point out that despite various safety nets — from community kitchens to old-age pensions — implementation gaps and lack of coordination continue to cost lives.
India’s Grim Hunger Reality
India’s position at 102 out of 123 countries in the Global Hunger Index 2025 underscores the depth of the crisis. Reports indicate that even in relatively prosperous states like Telangana, child malnutrition and stunting remain widespread. The elderly, particularly those without family support, face a silent struggle for food and dignity. Without structural changes to ensure equitable access to nutrition, India’s growth story risks being undermined by persistent hunger and deprivation.
Police Appeal for Identification
The deceased woman’s identity remains unknown. The Chandanagar Police have appealed to the public for information. Anyone who can help identify her is requested to contact 9490617118 or 8712663184.
