Vande Bharat Sleeper Debuts – High speed with stability

Vande Bharat Sleeper
  • Designed for Overnight Travel
  • Nationwide Rollout Planned
  • A New Phase in Rail Travel

Article Today, Hyderabad:

Indian Railways has entered a new phase with the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train. Known earlier for high speed day services, the Vande Bharat platform is now being adapted for long distance overnight travel. The new train aims to combine speed, comfort, and safety in a single service.

Successful High Speed Trials
During trial runs on the Kota–Nagda section, the sleeper version achieved a top speed of one hundred eighty kilometres per hour. The tests were conducted under the supervision of the Commissioner of Railway Safety. Despite the high speed, the train demonstrated stable performance with minimal vibration, reinforcing confidence in indigenous rail technology developed by Indian Railways.

Stability Under Operating Conditions
Meanwhile, a water stability test highlighted the engineering precision of the train. A glass filled with water remained steady on a table while the train ran at full speed. Railway officials stated that this level of balance ensures passenger comfort, particularly during night journeys. The results were shared publicly by Ashwini Vaishnaw, underscoring the system’s reliability.

Coach Design and Passenger Layout
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is planned with sixteen coaches. These include eleven 3tier air conditioned coaches, four 2 tier air conditioned coaches, and one first class air conditioned coach. In addition, the berths have been redesigned for comfort, with improved ladders and softer cushioning to support uninterrupted rest during long journeys.

Advanced Onboard Amenities
In addition, the train offers several modern amenities aligned with airline style standards. Night lighting has been optimised to reduce disturbance. Each berth is equipped with reading lamps and charging points. Bio vacuum toilets have been installed to enhance hygiene, along with separate facilities for persons with disabilities and baby care units for families.

Safety Systems and Monitoring
Safety has been given high priority in the sleeper version. The train is equipped with the Kavach anti collision system, an indigenous safety technology. Automatic doors, continuous surveillance through closed circuit cameras, and a direct communication system with the locomotive pilot have also been integrated. These features are intended to reduce risks and improve passenger confidence.

Expansion Plans Ahead
Therefore, Indian Railways plans to induct more than two hundred Vande Bharat Sleeper trains in the coming years. Manufacturing units such as BEML and Integral Coach Factory are involved in production. A joint venture with Russian partners under the Kinet framework is also supporting the rollout. Once deployed widely, the new trains are expected to reduce travel time significantly and reshape long distance rail travel across the country.
