A tragic incident unfolded at the Erragadda Mental Hospital in Hyderabad during the Telangana Formation Day celebrations, leading to the death of one patient and over 70 others falling seriously ill due to suspected food poisoning. One Patient Dies, Dozens Hospitalized After Consuming Contaminated Food
The unfortunate episode occurred on Monday at the Erragadda Institute of Mental Health, where special meals were arranged for the patients as part of the Telangana State Formation Day celebrations. However, within a few hours of consuming the food, many patients began experiencing severe symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, and intense abdominal pain. Tragically, a 30-year-old patient named Karan died due to cardiac arrest, while more than 70 others became ill and required immediate medical attention.
Collector’s Visit and Immediate Investigation
Hyderabad District Collector Anudeep Durishetty promptly visited the hospital to assess the situation. He held discussions with the hospital management and instructed them to identify the root cause of the food contamination without delay. He also emphasized the need to provide immediate and adequate medical care to all affected patients. Simultaneously, the police have initiated an investigation into the food supply process. The catering agency responsible for the food is being scrutinized for its hygiene practices and quality standards.
Health Minister Expresses Concern, Orders Swift Action
Telangana Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha expressed deep concern over the incident. He directed officials to expedite the inquiry and uncover the lapses in the hospital’s food supply system. The minister personally intervened and ensured that all patients receive the best possible treatment. He also stressed the importance of taking strict preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
Patients Being Treated in Erragadda and Osmania Hospitals
Of the 70 affected patients, 68 are currently reported to be in stable condition. Two patients remain in critical condition and are under close observation by a dedicated team of doctors. Most of the patients are being treated within the Erragadda facility itself, while medical support has also been mobilized from Osmania Hospital. A 24/7 helpline and patient assistance services have been activated to provide continuous care.
