Article Today, Hyderabad:
The Tollywood industry is witnessing a glaring disparity. Top actors continue to command crores in remuneration—often in advance—while daily-wage workers are struggling to make ends meet. Despite the booming business, producers are reluctant to pay fair wages to the very hands who power the shoots.
30% Wage Hike Demand Sparks Industry-wide Shutdown
In a strong response, the Telugu Film Employees Federation has announced a complete halt of all shootings from August 4. The shutdown applies not just to Telugu films but also to shoots of other language films and web series taking place in Hyderabad. Federation President Vallabhaneni Anil Kumar, General Secretary Ammiraju, and Treasurer T.V. Alexander jointly issued the statement on Sunday.
Producers Ignore Standing Wage Agreement
The Federation has been demanding a 30% wage hike for several months. Leaders argue that the rising cost of living makes the increase essential. They pointed out that the three-year wage agreement expired on June 30, and producers have failed to honour their promise of a revision. As a result, the Federation had no choice but to resort to a strike.
Only Compliant Producers Will be Allowed to Shoot
Leaders made it clear that only those producers who agree to the 30% wage hike in writing will be allowed to resume shooting. A formal agreement must be submitted through the Federation and verified by individual worker unions. Until then, all film activities will remain suspended across the industry.
Daily Payment a Core Demand
Besides the hike, the Federation is also pressing for daily wage payments without delay. Workers allege that previous commitments from producers were not fulfilled. They now insist that wages must be cleared every day after work, with no arrears. Leaders argue this is crucial for the workers’ financial security.
Federation Adamant, Negotiations on Edge
The Film Chamber is expected to mediate talks between the Federation and producers. Chamber members hope for a compromise. However, Federation leaders say they are unwilling to settle without a written commitment this time. Past experiences, they say, have left them disillusioned with verbal assurances.
Impact on Telugu Cinema and Beyond
The shutdown is likely to disrupt major film shoots at studios like Ramoji Film City and Annapurna Studios. Many movies and web series could face release delays. Producers may incur financial losses, and workers risk temporary unemployment. Yet, Federation leaders argue the fight is necessary for long-term justice.
A Critical Moment For the Industry
The outcome of these negotiations could shape the future of Tollywood. If resolved quickly, normalcy may return. If not, the industry could face prolonged unrest, affecting everyone from workers to viewers. As tensions rise, the eyes of the entertainment world remain fixed on Hyderabad.
