- Strict Ban on Hair Transplants and Plastic Surgeries
- Dentists Limited to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeries
Article Today, Hyderabad:In a major move, the Telangana Medical Council (TMC) has barred dentists from performing cosmetic procedures like hair transplants and plastic surgeries. The Council issued a clear directive on Thursday, citing guidelines from the National Medical Commission (NMC). TMC Chairman Dr. Mahesh Kumar and Vice Chairman Dr. Srinivas jointly released an official statement.
Dentists Limited to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeries
According to the Telangana Medical Council, only oral and maxillofacial procedures fall under the scope of dental qualifications. As per the regulations of the Dental Council of India (DCI), those holding Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) or Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) degrees are not authorised to perform cosmetic surgeries beyond this domain.
License Cancellation and Legal Action for Violators
The TMC warned that any dentist found violating these guidelines will face strict consequences, including license cancellation and possible legal proceedings. The Council said it received several complaints recently about unqualified dentists carrying out complex cosmetic procedures, endangering patient safety.
Public Advised to Consult Qualified Doctors Only
To protect patients, the TMC urged the public to seek treatment for cosmetic needs only from properly qualified medical professionals. It recommended consulting doctors with MBBS, MS, or MD degrees who are certified in the respective specialisations.
Focus on Patient Safety and Ethical Practice
This announcement underscores the growing concern about ethical standards and patient safety in the healthcare sector. The TMC’s firm stance aims to prevent misuse of dental qualifications and to reinforce clear boundaries between medical and dental practice in the state.
