The Telangana State Seed Certification Authority (TSSCA) has received the Seed Testing and Certification Excellence Award at the Indo-Africa Summit held in Hyderabad. The award, instituted by the Indian Council of Food and Agriculture (ICFA), recognises institutions for their outstanding services in the global seed sector. TSSCA Director Dr. Keshavulu accepted the award on behalf of the authority.
Advancing Innovation in Seed Certification
TSSCA has pioneered several initiatives that set benchmarks in the country. It introduced online seed certification and seed traceability systems for the first time in India. These efforts established a model for other States. Telangana also set up the International Seed Testing Centre with accreditation from the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA). The facility has supported quality seed exports and enhanced global linkages.
Contribution to Farmers and Producers
The authority provides training to farmers and seed producers, strengthening the seed supply chain. Telangana produces about 22 lakh quintals of certified seed annually. These seeds are supplied not only within the State but also to ten other States. The initiative supports farmers with better access to quality seed and ensures reliability in production.
Telangana as a Global Seed Hub
The State’s favourable conditions have positioned Telangana as a seed production hub. More than 500 seed companies and 3.5 lakh farmers are involved in seed production. The sector generates nearly 98 lakh tonnes of seed annually and provides employment to about three lakh people.
International Recognition Through ISTA
Dr. Keshavulu’s role as President of ISTA further enhanced Telangana’s reputation in the international seed sector. His leadership contributed to strengthening India’s standing in global seed research, testing, and certification practices.
