Article Today, Hyderabad:
The rapid rise of Sumanth, a former contract employee turned Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in Minister Konda Surekha’s office, has triggered a major controversy in Telangana politics. Accused of corruption, intimidation, and abuse of power, Sumanth’s case has exposed administrative lapses and deepened internal tensions within the ruling Congress party.
From Contract Employee to Power Centre
Sumanth’s career trajectory has been unusually swift. Initially hired on a contract basis in the Telangana Pollution Control Board, he was later deputed to the minister’s office on the recommendation of Minister Konda Surekha. Within a year, he reportedly wielded authority comparable to senior IAS officials, issuing instructions and influencing departmental affairs. His proximity to the minister’s family, particularly her daughter Sushmita Patel—reportedly a former classmate—appears to have strengthened his hold within the office.
Allegations of Extortion and Illegal Deals
Serious allegations have surfaced against Sumanth, ranging from bribery to extortion. According to official sources, he allegedly intimidated representatives of a cement company in the erstwhile Nalgonda district with a firearm to demand money. Complaints also link him to irregularities in the decisions of the Pollution Control Board, illicit financial dealings with stone crusher operators, and misuse of funds allocated for the Medaram Jatara. Reports further suggest his involvement in settlement activities in Warangal East constituency, allegedly in association with a known rowdy-sheeter. Investigators are also probing his ownership of a luxury residence in Kompally and an Audi car, which are suspected to be acquired through ill-gotten wealth.
Governance Under Scrutiny
Despite mounting complaints, Sumanth continued in office for nearly a year, raising concerns about the government’s internal oversight. His unrestrained influence and alleged role in financial irregularities have drawn criticism from within bureaucratic and political circles alike. Officials acknowledge that the episode reflects lapses in administrative monitoring and the absence of timely disciplinary action.
Chief Minister’s Inquiry and Fallout
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy reportedly ordered an internal inquiry into the allegations, following which Sumanth was dismissed from service. Subsequently, a midnight operation by the Task Force to arrest him at Minister Surekha’s residence created fresh controversy. The absence of a formal warrant and the timing of the raid sparked protests from the minister’s family.
Political Repercussions Within Congress
The incident has widened fissures within the Congress government. Minister Surekha’s daughter, Sushmita Patel, accused senior leaders of targeting their family under a caste-based conspiracy, claiming that BC leaders were being unfairly singled out. These allegations have deepened divisions within the cabinet and embarrassed the leadership.
Growing Unease in the Government
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy now faces the challenge of managing internal dissent while maintaining his government’s image of integrity. Minister Surekha’s absence from Thursday’s cabinet meeting has fueled speculation about her next move. Senior officials suggest that further disciplinary or administrative action may follow, depending on the outcome of ongoing investigations.
A Test of Accountability
The Sumanth episode has become a litmus test for the Congress government’s commitment to transparency and discipline. As inquiries continue, political observers note that the handling of this case could set a precedent for how Telangana’s new administration deals with corruption and internal power misuse within its ranks.
