Supreme Court Pulls Up States Over CCTV Lapses in Police Stations

Article Today, New Delhi:
The Supreme Court has come down heavily on the continued absence of functional CCTV cameras in police stations and investigation rooms across the country. Despite its directions issued five years ago, the Court noted that many facilities still lack surveillance systems. In several instances, cameras exist but remain non-operational.

Custodial Deaths Under Scrutiny
The matter has gained urgency following recent custodial deaths that have sparked concern nationwide. Allegations of torture and coercion during police questioning have resurfaced, adding weight to demands for transparency. Without reliable video footage, establishing the cause of death in custody has become increasingly difficult. Legal experts warn that such gaps undermine accountability and obstruct justice.

Accountability and Negligence
The Court observed that non-installation or poor maintenance of cameras deprives investigations of crucial evidence. Concerns have also been raised that in some cases footage has been deliberately withheld or erased. The Bench signalled its intent to hold officials responsible for negligence and directed that explanations be sought from relevant authorities.

Next Steps by the Court
To ensure compliance, the Supreme Court is likely to demand status reports from both the Union and State governments on the installation and upkeep of surveillance systems. It may also issue stricter orders to improve transparency in police functioning. Observers believe that this intervention could strengthen human rights safeguards and help prevent recurrence of custodial deaths.
