- 19 Killed in Police Firing as Generation Z activists
Article Today, Nepal:
Nepal witnessed a violent turn in protests led by young citizens after the government banned major social media platforms. Thousands of demonstrators, mostly from Generation Z, gathered on the streets of Kathmandu against corruption and restrictions on digital freedom. The unrest followed the decision of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s government to block 26 platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and YouTube.

Clashes Near Parliament
On Monday, protesters clashed with security forces near the national Parliament. Police opened fire when demonstrators broke barricades, leading to the death of 19 people, including a 12-year-old boy. More than 300 others were injured. Authorities imposed a curfew in Kathmandu and deployed the army to restore order.
Resignation of the Home Minister
The scale of violence prompted an emergency meeting of the National Security Council. Following the discussions, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned from his post. Officials indicated that the government might consider lifting the ban on social media platforms to reduce public anger.
Struggle Against Censorship
The government has defended its decision as a necessary control measure. However, protesters argued that the ban is an attack on freedom of expression. Despite internet disruptions, young activists coordinated their movement through alternative platforms such as TikTok and Reddit. They also emphasised that the protests were not only against the ban but also against systemic corruption.

Mounting Pressure on Prime Minister Oli
Initially concentrated in Kathmandu, the protests have spread to other cities, including Pokhara, where demonstrators attacked the Chief Minister’s office. Authorities responded with additional curfews. Prime Minister Oli maintained that restrictions were aimed at protecting national interests, saying that no attempt to weaken the country would be tolerated. Nevertheless, with mounting casualties and public anger, pressure on his government continues to grow. Analysts caution that if the youth-led demonstrations persist, the stability of the government could be seriously tested.
