Shake-Up at Oilfed: Yasmin Basha MD Removed

Shankaraiah Appointed as Oilfed MD

Article Today, Hyderabad

In a significant development, the state government has removed Yasmin Basha from the post of Managing Director (MD) of Oilfed amid mounting allegations of corruption and administrative failures. Shankaraiah has been appointed as the new full-time MD, with the Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao initiating steps towards reforms within the organisation.

Government Acts After Corruption Allegations Surface

The decision comes in the wake of several reports published by Sahanam Vande, Article Today digital papers, which consistently exposed a series of irregularities from the grassroots to the top levels within Oilfed. The reports pointed to serious lapses in governance and unchecked corrupt practices that tarnished the organisation’s reputation. These continuous revelations prompted swift action from the government.

Minister’s Surprise Visit Exposes Systemic Failures

Two days ago, Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao made an unannounced visit to the Oilfed headquarters. Strikingly, MD Yasmin Basha was absent from her office at the time, raising further questions. Whether her absence was coincidental or deliberate remains unclear. During his inspection, the Minister reportedly expressed strong displeasure over the prevailing administrative failures and directed officials to identify those responsible for the mismanagement highlighted in the media reports.

Yasmin Basha’s Exit Tied to Inaction and Overload

Sources indicate that Basha’s inability to curb the ongoing malpractices, coupled with the burden of multiple responsibilities, contributed to her removal. Allegedly, she was not allocating sufficient time to Oilfed affairs, a charge that gained considerable traction. The government’s decision to replace her was widely seen as the first step towards restoring integrity in the organisation.

Minister Tummala Focuses on Institutional Clean-Up

Minister Tummala is said to be taking a direct interest in streamlining Oilfed’s operations. His immediate priority has been to appoint a new MD, but insiders suggest that more reforms are on the horizon. The Minister is reportedly considering trimming the excessive concentration of power within the organisation.

Tirumaleshwar Reddy, who currently oversees four crucial departments, may soon be relieved of most of his portfolios, retaining only one key responsibility. Similarly, Jonna Satyanarayana, who holds two major divisions, is likely to have one department reassigned to other officials. Further, employees known for their deep involvement in dubious practices are expected to face stringent action. The new MD is likely to receive clear instructions to initiate structural reforms and to ensure the organisation regains public trust, particularly among the farming community.

Surender’s Return Blocked Amid Past Controversies

There was intense speculation that former MD Surender, currently serving as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, was lobbying for a return to Oilfed. Reports suggested that nearly 40% of Oilfed’s senior staff supported his reinstatement. However, the government reportedly rejected the proposal due to the serious allegations of irregularities during his previous tenure, particularly concerning oil palm plantations and the Narmetta factory tenders.

Despite his cordial relationship with Minister Tummala, Surender’s return was firmly opposed by some senior officials and political circles, citing the potential reputational risks involved.

Reform Path Ahead for Oilfed

The government’s decisive steps signal a broader clean-up within Oilfed, aimed at rooting out corruption and ensuring accountability. Minister Tummala is expected to direct the new leadership to implement stringent measures to safeguard the interests of farmers and rebuild the organisation’s credibility. The coming weeks may witness a series of administrative changes as the government works to set Oilfed back on track.
