Article Today, Mumbai:
Veteran Bollywood writer Salim Khan has stated that his family has never consumed beef. He said that beef was never cooked in his household and emphasised that Prophet Muhammad taught that cow’s milk is equivalent to a mother’s milk, which makes cow slaughter impermissible. While acknowledging that many Muslims eat beef as it is cheaper, Mr. Khan underlined that his family has refrained from it. His remarks have triggered wide debate on social media.
Recollections on Interfaith Marriage
Mr. Khan also shared personal reflections on his marriage to Salma Khan, formerly Sushila Charak. He said the wedding had taken place without major difficulties, though Salma’s family initially expressed reservations. He added that his upbringing had familiarised him with Hindu traditions, including celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi, which reassured her family about the alliance.
Blending Traditions
The couple’s marriage was solemnised under both Hindu and Islamic customs. Mr. Khan explained that since Salma cherished the saptapadi ritual, he personally arranged for a priest and took seven steps with her as per Hindu tradition. At the same time, they performed the nikah in accordance with Islamic practice. This blending of traditions had drawn public attention at the time and, according to Mr. Khan, set the foundation for a marriage that has endured for six decades.
Career and Legacy
Salim Khan, along with Javed Akhtar, formed the celebrated Salim–Javed duo that transformed Hindi cinema in the 1970s. Their films, including Sholay and Zanjeer, remain milestones in Indian film history. While his son Salman Khan emerged as a leading actor, Salim Khan retained an independent stature as a writer. Known for his reflections on family, culture, and values, his recent statements once again highlight his emphasis on faith, harmony, and personal conviction.
