Article Today, Hyderabad: In a strategic political move, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is preparing to convene a special meeting with Members of Parliament from INDIA bloc parties. The focus of the meeting will be to build consensus on the proposed Bill to enhance political reservations for Backward Classes (BCs).
Congress Takes Lead on BC Reservation Demand
With the Congress being a principal player in the INDIA bloc, Revanth Reddy is said to be taking the initiative with the support of party leader Rahul Gandhi. According to sources from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), efforts are underway to secure Gandhi’s approval for a dedicated session involving INDIA bloc MPs. The meeting is tentatively scheduled for July 21 in New Delhi.

Power Point Presentation to Highlight BC Bill
During the proposed meeting, Revanth Reddy is expected to present a detailed PowerPoint presentation outlining the need for enhanced BC reservations. The presentation will reportedly include data on social justice, political representation, and demographic composition. The goal is to urge the bloc to take a unified stand and push for Parliamentary approval of the proposed legislation.
State Resolution Demands Centre’s Nod
Recently, the Telangana Legislative Assembly passed a resolution demanding 42 percent reservations for BCs in the state. The Congress now aims to implement this in upcoming local body elections. However, to operationalize these quotas, the approval of the Union Government and Parliament is essential. Revanth Reddy is likely to highlight this procedural necessity during the INDIA bloc meeting.
BC Census and National Implications
The Telangana government has already completed a caste census, and this development may be showcased to strengthen the argument for nationwide BC welfare reforms. Revanth Reddy is expected to emphasize the social and electoral significance of the BC population in India and how it warrants broader constitutional safeguards.
Push for Prime Minister’s Appointment
The CMO has also confirmed that efforts are on to secure an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Congress-led delegation, comprising INDIA bloc MPs, aims to press for the inclusion of the BC Reservation Bill in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution—thereby safeguarding it from judicial review. They also plan to urge the Centre to table and pass the Bill in both Houses of Parliament at the earliest.
Congress Eyes Political Mileage
The move is seen as part of a broader Congress strategy to establish its leadership on BC issues at the national level. As the demand for BC rights gains momentum across states, the party hopes to turn the debate to its advantage—positioning itself as a champion of inclusive policies. Regardless of the stand taken by other parties, Congress appears to be laying the groundwork for a sustained campaign on BC representation.
