- Chennai’s ‘Paper Thatha’ Inspires Generations
- Age is just a number, spirit is everything
Article Today, Chennai:
At 94, most people slow down. But Gopalapuram resident Shanmugasundaram begins his day before sunrise, riding his bicycle through narrow Chennai lanes. Affectionately known as ‘Paper Thatha’, he delivers newspapers and milk packets with tireless commitment. His life stands as a living example that true enthusiasm comes from within, not from physical strength.
Up at 3:30 A.M., ready for duty
Shanmugasundaram wakes up each day at 3:30 a.m. sharp. Soon after, he sets off on his bicycle, carrying nearly 50 milk packets and 60 newspapers across eight streets in Gopalapuram. Rain or shine, illness or fatigue, he never skips a day. His unwavering dedication has earned him not only the love of his neighbourhood but also rare encounters with notable personalities like former Chief Minister Karunanidhi during his early delivery years.
A silent witness to change
He has been a silent part of the city’s daily rhythm for decades. Even during the pandemic, when subscription numbers dipped, he refused to stop. For Shanmugasundaram, the act of cycling and connecting with his neighbourhood is not just work — it is a way of life. His simple routine defies modern notions of ageing and retirement.
Joy Fuels his Journey…
Despite repeated pleas from family and grandchildren to retire, Shanmugasundaram finds joy in remaining active and being among people. After completing his deliveries, he spends time reading newspapers at a nearby marriage hall until noon. Later, he returns home and ends his day with a bowl of kanji — a simple rice gruel — and quiet reflection.
A lesson for All Generations…
His story is not just about endurance, but about purpose. Shanmugasundaram reminds us that every moment, when lived with joy and dedication, becomes meaningful. His journey encourages younger generations to stay active, connected, and committed — no matter the age.
