- Only 40 Percent of Last Year’s Target Achieved
- Setback in Oil Palm Cultivation
- Companies Failing to Meet Targets
- Negligence in Oil Fed Organization Too
- Agri Minister Thummala’s Orders Ignored
Article Today, Hyderabad:
The Telangana state government’s much-hyped oil palm cultivation targets are not yielding the desired results. For the 2024-25 financial year, against the set target of one lakh acres, only 40,247 acres have been cultivated so far, which is a mere 40 percent. Along with several private organizations, the state-owned Oil Fed organization has also shown severe negligence in this matter. Not a single organization has fully met its designated target. While some organizations have shown mediocre results, the performance of many others has been highly disappointing.
What are the reasons?
There are several reasons behind the failure to achieve the oil palm cultivation target. Lack of proper awareness among farmers and disinterest from some cultivators could be one reason. Additionally, the lack of basic infrastructure and unavailability of irrigation facilities have hindered the expansion of cultivation. Moreover, the non-receipt of government incentives in a timely manner and the absence of marketing facilities have also discouraged farmers.
What is the government machinery doing?
Despite so many problems, the government machinery’s failure to respond in a timely manner is drawing criticism. The situation has arisen due to the failure of officials to identify problems at the field level and take appropriate measures to solve them. There are allegations that officials have failed to monitor the implementation of the targets instead of just setting them. The government should wake up even now and move forward with a comprehensive plan. The oil palm cultivation target can only be achieved if pressure is put on private organizations and farmers are supported in all possible ways. Otherwise, this will remain limited to paper.
