MNJ Cancer Institute Director’s Continuation Sparks Row

Article Today, Hyderabad: A controversy has erupted over the continued service of Dr. Srinivasulu, Director of MNJ Institute of Oncology, despite rules suggesting his retirement. Medical faculty allege that he should have retired in Andhra Pradesh last year but remains in the top post in Telangana. They claim this violates service norms and blocks promotions for senior professors.

Opted for Andhra Pradesh During Reorganisation

During the 2016 State reorganisation, Dr. Srinivasulu voluntarily chose Andhra Pradesh. The Kamal Nath-led allocation committee listed him as a Professor for that state. However, citing the absence of a suitable post, he approached the High Court. The court allowed him to continue in Telangana temporarily until the Centre made a final decision. Since then, the matter has remained unresolved. Faculty say both state governments have ignored directions from the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) to settle the issue.

Due for Retirement Last Year in AP

In Andhra Pradesh, the retirement age for government doctors is 63 years. By that rule, Dr. Srinivasulu should have retired in June last year. His continuation in Telangana, where the retirement age is 65, allows him two extra years of service. Faculty argue this forces the Telangana government to bear his retirement benefits and pension, despite his original allocation to Andhra Pradesh.

Senior Professors Denied Promotion : Professors at MNJ say his prolonged tenure has denied them rightful promotions. They point out that several eligible candidates are nearing the end of their careers without a chance to hold the Director’s post. In a formal representation to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, they urged immediate intervention, warning that further delay would deepen resentment among faculty.

Call for Immediate Action

The protesting doctors say the issue is no longer about one individual but about fairness, service norms, and the career prospects of Telangana faculty. They demand that the government act swiftly to implement retirement rules and appoint a new Director from among eligible professors.
