Medical Students Protest for Stipend…

  • Private Medical Colleges Warn Protesting Students

Article Today, Hyderabad:
Medical students protesting for their rightful stipend are reportedly facing open threats from private medical college managements. According to students, the managements are warning them that their medical degrees may be withheld if they continue protests. On Monday, MBBS house surgeons and postgraduate students from Mahaveer Medical College in Vikarabad staged a protest demanding stipends as per National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines. Instead of addressing their concerns, a college representative allegedly warned them not to protest if they wished to secure their degrees. However, the students stood firm and continued their protest, despite the management’s irritation.

No Stipend Paid Despite Clear Regulations

Several private medical colleges in Telangana, including Mahaveer Medical College, are reportedly refusing to pay stipends to students. As per NMC guidelines, private colleges must pay stipends to students on par with government institutions. MBBS house surgeons are entitled to a minimum stipend of Rs. 25,000 per month, while postgraduate students must receive at least Rs. 50,000. These stipends are not optional; they are mandatory payments recognizing the medical services provided by students. NMC regulations clearly state that stipends should be paid from the fees collected from students. Despite this, many private colleges are allegedly ignoring the rules. Students say they are forced to work long hours without payment, describing it as a form of exploitation.

Students Determined to Fight

Students protesting at Mahaveer Medical College have expressed deep frustration. They argue that the management is treating them like unpaid labour while also threatening their academic future. “We are fulfilling our duties, providing essential services to patients. Still, we are denied the basic financial support that is rightfully ours,” one protesting student said. The students say they will not back down and will continue to demand their rights, even if management continues to intimidate them.

This protest has once again highlighted the wider issue of non-compliance by private medical colleges across the state. Medical student associations are calling on authorities to intervene and ensure that NMC regulations are strictly enforced.
