Leaders Under Fire for Sword-wielding Displays

Article Today, Hyderabad/Amaravathi:
The use of swords and violent imagery by political leaders in Andhra Pradesh has sparked widespread criticism. Analysts argue that such displays send the wrong message to the public and risk normalising aggression in political life.

Past Controversy Involving Mr. Jagan
In the past, supporters of former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy displayed a flex board featuring the popular film dialogue “Rappa Rappa” from Pushpa. The poster was seen as provocative and was opposed by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu at the time. Critics viewed the display as an attempt to incite passions rather than focus on governance.

Pawan Kalyan’s Stage Stunt
Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan drew similar attention recently during a pre-release event for the film OG in Hyderabad. He appeared on stage holding a sword and swung it in front of the audience. A video of the incident went viral, showing the weapon narrowly missing his bodyguard standing behind him. While admirers praised his courage, opponents questioned the responsibility of such actions by a senior political figure.

Security and Safety Concerns
Security experts have raised concern that such stunts can lead to serious safety lapses. They pointed out that a leader under high security should avoid acts that endanger himself or those around him. The episode has revived memories of Mr. Kalyan’s earlier campaign performances, where he also used dramatic gestures. Critics argue that the risks are far greater now that he holds office.

Wrong Signal to Youth
Observers warn that the symbolic use of weapons in public events may influence young followers to imitate such behaviour. They stress that political leaders should set an example by focusing on people’s issues rather than theatrical displays. In Tamil Nadu too, the Hyderabad event has become a talking point, highlighting concerns about the growing overlap between cinema and politics in South India.

Blurring Line Between Cinema and Politics
Political analysts say the reliance on cinematic stunts undermines the seriousness of politics. They note that earlier generations of leaders engaged directly with people’s grievances, while the present trend shifts attention to spectacle. This change, they argue, risks reducing politics to entertainment rather than public service.
