Kamal Haasan Gains Political Mileage in Tamil Nadu

Article Today, Chennai:

Kannada Language Row Turns Into a Political Strategy?
Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief Kamal Haasan has once again stirred the political waters of South India with his controversial remarks. During a promotional event for his upcoming film Thug Life, Kamal’s comments about the origin of the Kannada language sparked a major uproar in Karnataka. While the controversy created outrage across the border, in Tamil Nadu it seems to be working in his political favour.

Kamal’s Remark Sparks Outrage in Karnataka
At the Thug Life promotion event, Kamal Haasan reportedly stated that the Kannada language originated from Tamil. This triggered strong backlash from various Kannada organisations and political parties. Many demanded an apology and called for a boycott of his film across Karnataka. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce also took a strong stand and suspended the release and screening of Thug Life within the state.

Legal Battle Fails to Ease the Situation
In response to the backlash, Kamal Haasan approached the Karnataka High Court. However, he maintained that his words were misunderstood and refused to apologise. Despite seeking legal relief, he did not get the expected outcome. Eventually, Kamal decided not to release the film in Karnataka. This decision further angered Kannada audiences, deepening the divide between the two neighbouring states.

Rajya Sabha Path Opens Through DMK Alliance
While tensions flared in Karnataka, Kamal’s political strategy appeared to pay off in Tamil Nadu. During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, his party MNM supported the ruling DMK alliance. As part of the alliance understanding, DMK promised to nominate Kamal Haasan for a Rajya Sabha seat. On May 28, DMK officially included his name among six candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections from Tamil Nadu, scheduled for June 19. This move marks a significant step in Kamal’s parliamentary journey.

Backlash in Karnataka, Boost in Tamil Nadu
Though his comments drew widespread criticism in Karnataka, they seemed to resonate positively with Tamil audiences. Many in Tamil Nadu viewed his statement as an assertion of Tamil pride and heritage. Political analysts believe that Kamal is strategically using this controversy to boost his standing among Tamil voters. With his name trending across the state, Kamal Haasan is gaining fresh political momentum.

A Calculated Move Ahead of Assembly Polls?
Observers suggest that Kamal’s controversial remarks are not accidental but part of a larger political plan. With an eye on the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Kamal appears to be positioning himself and his party to win more seats. By highlighting Tamil identity, he is likely aiming to consolidate support among linguistic and cultural voters. In this light, the Kannada language row may well serve as a calculated political step in his long-term strategy.

Final Note: Political Storm or Smart Strategy?
While the controversy may have closed doors in Karnataka, it seems to have opened new ones in Tamil Nadu. Kamal Haasan’s approach—though divisive—is bringing him increased visibility and relevance in the state’s political landscape. Whether it’s a misstep or a masterstroke, the coming months will show how this controversy impacts his political future.
