Article Today, Maharashtra:
A 25-year-old man, identified as Saksham Tate, was allegedly killed in an honour killing in Nanded district of Maharashtra following his relationship with a 21-year-old woman from a Scheduled Caste community. The incident occurred on November 27 when Saksham was reportedly attacked in the Juna Ganj area while he was with his friends. Police said the assault was carried out by members of the woman’s family who opposed the relationship on caste grounds.
Relationship Across Caste Lines
Investigators stated that Saksham belonged to the Maratha community, classified under the Open Category, while the woman, Anchal Mamidwar, belonged to the Mahar community. The two were in a relationship for nearly three years. However, her family reportedly objected to the relationship citing caste differences. Tensions reportedly escalated in recent weeks ahead of the fatal attack.
Details of the Crime
According to the police, Anchal’s brother Himesh allegedly opened fire at Saksham, critically injuring him. The attackers then allegedly struck him with stones, causing fatal head injuries. Police said Anchal’s father Ganesh Mamidwar, her other brother Sahil, and two additional accused were also involved in the assault. The victim died at the spot due to multiple injuries.
Police Action and Charges
Meanwhile, the Nanded police arrested Ganesh Mamidwar, Himesh, and Sahil in connection with the murder. Cases have been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and the Arms Act. The accused have been remanded to police custody for further investigation.
Funeral Scene draws Attention
In addition, the woman appeared at Saksham’s cremation and publicly declared him as her partner, drawing widespread attention across the State. Police officials said they are providing her security in view of the sensitivity of the case and possible threats.
Wider Social Concern
However, the incident has once again brought the issue of caste-based violence and opposition to inter-caste relationships into focus. Therefore, social organisations and legal activists have reiterated the need for stricter enforcement of laws meant to protect couples from honour-based crimes. The investigation is continuing as police work to identify the remaining accused and establish the full sequence of events.
