Harish Rao Emerges as Strong Contender for Chief Ministership

Article Today, Hyderabad:
A 20-page report circulating on WhatsApp groups has highlighted deepening fissures within the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). The flash survey suggests that internal rivalries in the party are likely to benefit the Congress. Significantly, it points to Harish Rao gaining ground as a popular leader, even ahead of K.T. Rama Rao.

Growing Image of Harish Rao
According to the survey, Mr. Rao’s public image has strengthened due to both his individual appeal and the ongoing family divisions within BRS. This has led to the perception that he could emerge as a future Chief Ministerial candidate. Observers also note that his rising influence poses a challenge to Mr. Rama Rao’s political prospects.

Kavitha’s Resignation Debate
The resignation of BRS MLC K. Kavitha has added another dimension to the unfolding developments. The survey indicates that the decision was not viewed as a surprise by the public. A majority of respondents stated that her move was expected, given the visible internal disputes in the party. Only a small section regarded it as an unexpected development.

Impact on BRS
The survey notes that Ms. Kavitha’s resignation could have serious consequences for BRS. Around 43 percent of respondents believed that it would weaken the party further. Her allegations against Harish Rao and Santosh Kumar have already triggered wider discussions and signalled growing divisions within the organisation.

Possibility of a New Party
On future plans, the survey shows that 71 percent of respondents expect Ms. Kavitha to launch her own party. However, there is uncertainty about the level of support it might attract. While 31 percent said they would support her, 44 percent indicated that their decision would depend on her agenda and political approach.

Advantage to Congress
The findings underline that the Congress is seen as the immediate beneficiary of the BRS crisis. Nearly three-fourths of the respondents said the internal conflicts were likely to strengthen the Congress, while also creating openings for the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Issues of Credibility
The survey also reflects concerns regarding Ms. Kavitha’s political credibility. About 24 percent of respondents linked her to the ongoing liquor case, suggesting it could hinder her career. Similarly, her advocacy of BC reservations was seen by many as politically motivated, failing to gain wide public trust.

Continuing Political Role
Despite the challenges, 25 percent of respondents believe that Ms. Kavitha will remain a significant political figure even outside the BRS. However, the party’s current divisions are seen as an unprecedented test for its leadership, with Harish Rao emerging stronger in the eyes of the public.
