Hyderabad-based oncological surgeon Dr.Raghuram Pillarisetty has been conferred an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG). The recognition was presented at a special ceremony in the historic college hall by Professor Hany Ateeba, President of the RCPSG. Dr. Raghuram is the youngest recipient of this honour in South Asia.
Record Achievement
Dr. Raghuram also created a unique record by becoming the only surgeon in the world to have both qualified in the FRCS examination at the same college in 1997 and later received its honorary fellowship. The event marked a milestone in his career and added another accolade to his professional journey.
Contribution to Cancer Care
Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Ateeba praised Dr. Raghuram’s work in advancing standards of breast cancer surgery and public health awareness. He noted that for over two decades, Dr. Raghuram has given new hope to thousands of patients. His role in raising surgical standards and building global networks between surgeons was also acknowledged.
Recognition from Peers
Professor Abhay Rane, Registrar of the Glasgow Royal College, highlighted the impact of Dr. Raghuram’s contributions in India and worldwide. He described the improvements brought to breast cancer care in India as “remarkable” and said the recognition was well deserved.
A Career of Distinction
Expressing gratitude, Dr. Raghuram dedicated the award to his family, patients, parents, and country. He has previously received honorary fellowships from seven leading surgical colleges across the world. He is also a recipient of the Padma Shri and the Dr. B.C. Roy National Award.
Global Recognition
Notably, Dr. Raghuram is the only surgeon to have been honoured by all three Royal Colleges of Surgery in the United Kingdom. He has also been awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2020 and the Honorary FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2022. These recognitions underline his global stature as a leader in surgical oncology.
