In a significant moment for India’s medical community, Dr.Raghuram has been elected to the governing council of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. With a history spanning over 425 years, the institution is among the world’s most respected medical bodies. Dr. Raghu Ram is the first Indian surgeon to be elected to its governing council, marking a major international recognition of Indian surgical expertise.

Global Representation Outside the UK
Dr. Raghu Ram will represent countries outside the United Kingdom on the council, a role that carries both symbolic and professional importance. Meanwhile, the election is regarded as one of the most competitive in the history of the Royal Colleges. The seat reserved for surgeons from outside the UK had attracted 26 leading candidates from different parts of the world.

Term and Competitive Election
Following a closely contested process, Dr. Raghu Ram emerged as the sole winner for tthe 2025–2028 term. Therefore, his election is being viewed as a rare global endorsement of his contribution to breast cancer surgery and public health advocacy. Medical experts have described the outcome as a landmark for India’s presence in global medical governance.

Contribution to Breast Cancer Care
Dr. Raghu Ram is the founder-director of the KIMS–Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases in Hyderabad. Over the years, he has played a key role in improving early detection, treatment protocols, and awareness of breast cancer in India. In addition, his work has focused on making quality breast care accessible to women across economic sections.

Dr. Raghu Ram stated that he dedicates this honour to his mentors, his patients who have battled breast cancer, those who are currently undergoing treatment, and to the country.
