Affordable Care: Doctor Treats 18 Lakhs for ₹2

Article Today, Kannur:
Dr. A.K. Rairu Gopal, known across Kerala as the “Rs. 2 Doctor,” passed away on Sunday, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, humility, and unmatched dedication. For over five decades, he served the poor and needy in Kannur, charging only Rs. 2 per consultation. His death has triggered a wave of grief across the state, with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressing deep condolences, calling him a role model for today’s generation.

Fifty Years of Practice, Same Rs. 2 Fee
In an age when consultation fees and medical tests can cost thousands, Dr. Gopal’s simplicity stood in stark contrast. He never increased his fee beyond Rs. 2, even as the cost of living soared. Despite his old age, he continued to practice tirelessly, becoming a trusted figure for the poor in Kannur. His modest fee structure remained unchanged for 50 years, earning him the affectionate title of the “Rs. 2 Doctor.”

Patients Before Profit
While many doctors today are drawn to corporate hospitals and financial incentives, Dr. Gopal kept away from pharmaceutical companies and their lavish gifts. He rejected expensive drugs in favour of affordable alternatives. His prescription pad rarely carried brand names. Instead, it reflected concern for the patient’s pocket. He never accepted commissions or material rewards. Sales representatives from pharma companies stayed away, knowing he would not entertain them.

Practice From Dawn To Dusk
Dr. Gopal’s clinic opened as early as 6 a.m. and operated until 4 p.m. daily. His daily schedule began at 2:15 a.m. with work in his cattle shed, followed by prayer and reading the morning newspaper by 5:30 a.m. He would begin seeing patients by 6 a.m. and continued without rest. On busy days, he consulted over 300 patients. Even those who could not afford Rs. 2 often received free medicines from him. His daily routine was a reflection of discipline and purpose.

Healthcare With a Human Touch
More than just a doctor, he was a source of emotional and moral support for thousands. Patients travelled long distances to see him, preferring his wisdom over the grandeur of corporate hospitals. He not only treated physical ailments but also gave people the courage to face life’s difficulties. His soft-spoken manner, simplicity, and time for every patient made him a figure of trust and care.

Legacy of Service Inherited From His Father
Dr. Gopal was the son of renowned doctor and philanthropist Dr. A.G. Nambiar and A.K. Lakshmikutti Amma. He faithfully followed the principles laid down by his father, who had once advised his sons never to use medicine as a tool for making money. Dr. Gopal and his brothers—Venu Gopal, Krishna Gopal, and Raj Gopal—upheld this philosophy with pride.

Eighteen Lakh Lives Touched
In his long and selfless career, Dr. Gopal treated over 18 lakh (1.8 million) patients. Yet, he remained humble. He never sought media attention, awards, or wealth. His joy lay in healing others. Chief Minister Vijayan acknowledged that Dr. Gopal’s services brought relief and dignity to lakhs of poor patients and added that his memory will live on as a beacon for future generations.

Farewell To A People’s Doctor
Dr. Gopal’s passing marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Kerala’s healthcare history. At a time when the medical field is increasingly commercial, his life is a reminder of what true service means. He leaves behind a void not just in Kannur, but in the hearts of all who knew him or heard of him.
