- Massive Tips Stuns Delivery Staff
- Wealth Display Sparks Debate
- Delivery Apps in Spotlight
Article Today, Bengaluru:
Online delivery platforms in urban India are increasingly becoming arenas for unusual consumer behaviour. What began as a convenience-driven service has now evolved into a space where extravagant orders and eye-catching spending patterns attract public attention. Recent incidents in Bangalore have highlighted this growing trend.
High-Value Condom Purchase
The discussion intensified after a customer placed an order worth nearly Rs. 1 lakh for condoms through Swiggy Instamart. The order reportedly included large quantities across multiple brands available on the platform. When the delivery executive arrived with several packed boxes, he initially assumed they contained electronic items. The contents, however, surprised him and soon became a talking point among local residents.
Unexpected Windfall for Delivery Executive
Meanwhile, another delivery executive in the city received an unusually large tip of Rs. 68,000 from a customer after completing a routine delivery. The order itself involved items of modest value. The executive initially believed the payment was made in error. However, the customer later clarified that the amount was given intentionally. For the worker, the tip equalled several months of regular earnings.
Pattern of Extravagant Spending
In addition, such instances are not isolated. Across the country, delivery platforms have witnessed orders involving unusually expensive items and tips running into several lakhs of rupees. There have been reports in the past of customers placing high-value orders for food and daily essentials, largely for novelty or attention. These incidents often gain traction on social media, amplifying their reach.
Changing Consumer Behaviour
Therefore, observers note a shift in how online shopping is perceived. Beyond utility, it is increasingly used as a marker of status or as a means to attract public notice. While such acts occasionally benefit delivery personnel, they also raise questions about inequality and responsible spending in a society where many workers earn modest wages.
Experts Flag Emerging Trend
However, technology analysts suggest that as quick-commerce platforms expand, more such unconventional orders may surface. The combination of ease, anonymity, and instant gratification is reshaping consumer habits. As digital commerce grows, these episodes reflect both the opportunities and contradictions of an increasingly connected economy.
