Article Today, Visakhapatnam:
The longest glass skywalk in India has commenced operations atop the Kailasagiri hill in Visakhapatnam. Constructed between two major peaks, the transparent structure spans 120 metres, providing visitors with a thrilling feeling of walking in the sky. Beneath the toughened glass, the blue waters of the sea are clearly visible. Consequently, the skywalk has quickly emerged as a major attraction for tourists, particularly the youth seeking adventure and scenic views.
Engineering and Capacity
The structure serves as an engineering feat, connecting the two prominent hilltops of Kailasagiri. It possesses the capacity to accommodate up to 150 people at any given time. Officials from the Tourism Department state that the panoramic view from the skywalk is unparalleled in India. The vista encompasses the deep valley below, the distant coastline of the Bay of Bengal, and the rhythmic ocean waves. Therefore, this new addition is expected to elevate Visakhapatnam’s standing in the tourism sector.
Safety and Durability Measures
Safety was accorded paramount importance during the construction of the glass skywalk. The floor is composed of three layers of toughened glass, designed to bear a substantial weight of approximately 45 tonnes. Furthermore, the structure is engineered to remain stable even when exposed to high wind speeds, up to 200 kilometres per hour. In the evening, the bridge is illuminated with special LED lighting, enhancing the magical experience of walking high above the ground. The facility remains open daily from 9 AM to 8 PM.
Ticketing and Accessibility
The glass skywalk has become an easily accessible attraction for visitors to Visakhapatnam. Tourists are required to purchase a dedicated ticket for the skywalk, in addition to the standard Kailasagiri ropeway ticket. The cost is set at ₹100 for adults and ₹50 for children. However, the authorities anticipate heavy rush, particularly on weekends, due to the structure’s popularity. Therefore, visitors are advised to book tickets online in advance to minimise waiting times and ensure a smooth experience. The skywalk is set to become a primary highlight, moving beyond established attractions like RK Beach, Simhachalam, and the Submarine Museum.
