The Uttar Pradesh government has issued new directives permitting women to work night shifts between 7 PM and 6 AM Officials stated that the rules apply to twenty-nine categories of hazardous and special industries. The decision requires explicit consent from women employees before assigning them to night duty. Authorities believe that the move will open wider employment opportunities and help integrate more women into the industrial workforce.
Higher Wages and Additional Benefits
Under the revised regulations, women working night shifts must receive double wages. The government has also increased the permissible overtime limit from 75 hours to 144 hours per quarter. Officials clarified that this extended overtime will also be calculated at double the regular rate. Women may work up to six days a week, provided safety and welfare norms are met. The government expects the revised wage structure to support women in achieving financial independence at a faster pace. Employers must ensure equal pay and provide essential workplace facilities without exception.
Focus on Safety and Infrastructure
Safety has been placed at the core of the new framework. The government has mandated the installation of CCTV cameras across workplaces employing women at night. Companies must provide secure transportation, along with sufficient security personnel, for all night-shift employees. Officials emphasised that these measures are designed to ensure that women can work without fear or constraints.
Implementation Through Gazette Notification
The directives will come into effect after the upcoming Gazette notification. Labour department officials noted that strict compliance will be enforced. They added that the initiative marks a significant step in strengthening women’s economic and social mobility in the State. Authorities expect the policy to influence wider reforms in industrial employment practices across the region.
