- Party Leaders Meet Chandrababu Naidu, Return Without Clarity
- Decision to Back BJP in Jubilee Hills Bypoll Signals Political Retreat
Article Today, Hyderabad/Amaravati:
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Telangana appears adrift as senior leaders met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu at his Undavalli residence on Tuesday. The meeting, described by participants as a “courtesy visit,” ended without any concrete decisions. The outcome has revealed the absence of a clear roadmap for the party in Telangana. Following the discussions, it became evident that the TDP would not contest the Jubilee Hills bypoll, instead extending support to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Leadership Vacuum in Telangana
The state unit of the TDP continues to face uncertainty after the resignation of its former president Kasani Gnaneshwar. Despite repeated appeals from local leaders, a new president has not been appointed. The party’s focus remains confined to internal organisational matters, such as the appointment of mandal-level leaders. With around 1.78 lakh registered members, TDP cadres across districts remain active but directionless. Party insiders admitted that the prolonged delay in appointing a leader reflects the central leadership’s lack of attention to Telangana.
Alliance Signals in Bypoll Politics
Ahead of the Jubilee Hills bypoll, TDP leaders had expected guidance from Mr. Naidu on whether to contest independently or align with the BJP. However, the decision to stay away from the fray and back the BJP reflects a continued dependence on the saffron party’s influence. Analysts note that this approach leaves little room for TDP’s independent political revival in Telangana. The party’s declaration that it would stand with the BJP in observing the ruling party’s outcome has intensified criticism that TDP lacks a distinct political identity in the State.
Disheartened Cadre and Unclear Strategy
TDP leaders in Telangana have reportedly been working on the ground despite the absence of formal instructions from the leadership. Many expected that the meeting with Mr. Naidu would offer clarity and morale boost. Instead, leaders returned disappointed as no specific timeline was announced for restructuring the state unit or appointing a full-time president. Party insiders say the indecision has left local leaders demoralised and unsure about the future course of action.
Future Tied to BJP’s Trajectory
Observers believe that the TDP’s current stance effectively positions it as an ally or subsidiary force to the BJP in Telangana. The lack of an independent political agenda, coupled with organisational stagnation, has deepened concerns over the party’s relevance in the State. For now, the TDP’s immediate focus appears to be on aligning with the BJP’s strategy in upcoming elections while awaiting directives from its central leadership.
