Article Today, Hyderabad:
Farmers are facing severe distress due to the shortage of urea at a crucial stage of the cropping season. On Saturday, tensions flared in Amarachinta mandal of Wanaparthy district when farmers gathered at the local PACS centre demanding supply of urea. As officials failed to respond to their repeated appeals, angry farmers resorted to stone-pelting. The situation turned tense, and police had to intervene to bring the crowd under control.
Across Telangana, farmers have been staging protests over the scarcity of urea. They allege that despite their repeated pleas, the administration has not ensured timely supply. The crisis has become sharper as sowing and fertiliser application are at their peak.
Meanwhile, allegations have surfaced against certain Markfed officials, who are said to be diverting urea in collusion with middlemen. Farmers complain that such diversions are aggravating the shortage in rural areas. Critics point out that no firm action has been taken against those responsible, raising questions about the government’s monitoring system.
With mounting pressure in several districts, the demand for an immediate and transparent distribution of urea has grown louder. Farmers warn that the unrest may intensify further if the shortage continues.
