Article Today, Hyderabad: The political spotlight in Telangana has shifted to MLC K. Kavitha, as her recent actions and remarks indicate a widening rift with the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leadership. Analysts believe that her divergence from the party line, especially on Backward Classes (BC) reservations, suggests a deeper separation from the party’s core leadership. Since returning from her US tour, Kavitha’s statements have been increasingly assertive and unaligned with the official stance of her party.
Challenging the Father’s Party
On May 2, during the BRS formation day celebrations, Kavitha reportedly wrote a confidential letter to party president K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), questioning internal matters. Although the letter surfaced only 20 days later—while she was abroad—her reaction upon return was telling. At the Hyderabad airport, she lashed out, saying, “KCR is like a god, but there are devils around him.” She also openly criticised senior party leaders like K.T. Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao. Surprisingly, the party chose to remain silent, leading observers to believe the issue had settled. However, subsequent developments suggest otherwise.
A Clear Voice of Dissent
In recent days, Kavitha’s position on the BC reservation ordinance has further distanced her from the party line. While the BRS has demanded legislative backing for the ordinance and accused the government of political gimmickry, Kavitha welcomed the move. She praised the ordinance as a long-awaited step and even hosted celebrations to mark its introduction. In doing so, she not only supported the government but also indirectly criticised her own party’s approach to the issue.
Frustration Within the Party
Kavitha’s public comments, especially her dismissive response to BRS BC leaders who burned effigies in protest, have stirred controversy. “They probably have no work to do, that’s why they did this,” she quipped. Adding to the tension, she claimed she consulted legal experts before supporting the ordinance and confidently stated, “Eventually, even BRS will have to follow my path.” This defiance has reportedly angered the party leadership and raised questions about her future in BRS.
Muted Party Response to Public Spat
The silence of BRS leaders during the recent public spat between Kavitha and journalist-activist Teenmaar Mallanna has been notable. While Congress leaders came out strongly in support of Kavitha, BRS issued only a short statement. Kavitha, when questioned, remarked that she would leave the matter to their wisdom. This nonchalance from the party during a personal attack on one of its senior leaders has fueled speculation that Kavitha is no longer a central figure in BRS strategy.
Pattern of Political Isolation
BRS has historically handled dissent without direct confrontation. Instead of suspending or expelling leaders, it has often sidelined them quietly—by denying responsibilities, ignoring public statements, and waiting for them to exit voluntarily. Political observers suggest the same may now be happening with Kavitha. Her absence from key party activities, lack of visible support from top leaders, and independent public posturing all point towards an orchestrated distancing.
What Lies Ahead for Kavitha?
These developments have triggered widespread speculation about Kavitha’s future in the party. While she continues to hold the MLC position, her political trajectory appears increasingly separate from BRS. With a growing list of differences and no sign of reconciliation from the leadership, the coming months could prove decisive for her political career. Telangana’s political circles are watching closely to see whether this signals a new chapter for Kavitha—possibly outside the pink party fold.
